Brazil was once known as the land of
football. In the 21st century, the fans of Palmeiras, a team founded by Italian
immigrants, face a dilemma: how to keep going to the stadium. An unjustifiably
high ticket price of around R$50.00 (R$250.00 in Brazil), converted into dollars, is
driving fans away from a place that used to be livable for ordinary people.
That's exactly what I said; it used to be a welcoming place, now it's not.
The disenchantment with football is
complex. The fans now seem to be those who can actually afford to go to a
match, and football has become a pastime that can be bought by those who can
afford it. Today, the Palmeirense family are living with this new era, the
disillusionment of self-serving football. Those who pay go to the stadium to
see a show, they don't sing, they don't support, they just watch in awe,
whatever the result, whatever happens, they'll be at the next game, they'll
take their selfies and post another match of my Palmeiras.
To the football fans, I say sorry!
They are trying, and for a moment they are succeeding, to put an end to
football, starting with a ban on two supporters of the same team attending the
same match in the stands in the state of São
Paulo. Anyone who has been in the stands knows what
I'm talking about. Football's elite have gone to extremes, with those who can
do more crying less! Weeping over counted favours? What can we expect from
football, which used to bring diversity and social interaction between social
classes? Honestly, football fans, Palmeiras fans, I really don't know what to
expect from football anymore, from Brazilians to other fans around the world,
the show has changed screens and time is itself, unfortunately this is the
reality of Palmeiras, unfortunately football has become sad.
